1981 - 82

Annual report to VSA

Sale Women's Softball Association - Annual Report 1981-82

The 1981/82 season saw 25 teams competing in 3 grades - 10 Open, 7 Under 16 and 8 Primary. The Open sides competed in one grade but split into two grades for the finals. A weekly practice game was also arranged for a group of primary children u/hose entry was received too late to be included in the competition. Winners of premierships were:-

A GRADE - Squaws Green Under 15 - API/Lil1Abners

Best and Fairest Winners:-

B GRADE - Redsox

Primary - Guthridge Martians

OPEN - Liz Foreman

Under 16 - Jenny McGrath

Primary - Emma Taylor

Grand Finals were conducted in the worst conditions of the season, with rain and failing light making high standard play impossible and conditions for spectators very unpleasant.

Life Membership was awarded to Bev Beard for her years of valuable service as player, coach, administrator and umpire. The Association unfortunately lost the services of Helen & Mike Fahy during the season as Mike was transferred in his job. Both had made valuable contributions as player, coaches, umpires and administrators during their stay in Sale.

The Association competed with moderate success in all sections of the Gippsland Regional Championships at Bairnsdale and the Under 14 and Under 17 State Championships. The Under 17 trip to Sunshine was the most, successful with the girls missing out on the finals by percentage only. This was a particularly good effort as all but two of the team are eligible for Under 17 again next season.

In an effort to build up our stock of umpires several juniors have been given umpiring jobs with experienced umpires overseeing them, but, as no doubt with most other Associations, we are desperately short of good umpires. The brunt of the load falls on a few who are also heavily involved in playing coaching and administrating. We ware fortunate to pick up the services during the season of a qualified umpire and willing coach in Brendan Andrews. Another late arrival to the district last season was Gordon Leo who has had experience coaching juniors in the Waverley district. His services will be greatly appreciated in the coming season.

In May, 3 of our members, Bev Beard, David & Frances McGrath obtained their Level 1 Coaching Certificate and another four members will be attending the next course in August.

Our Association has recently made a submission to the Council for consideration for more satisfactory playing fields which we have proposed could be shared with baseball and men's & women's hockey. As our present facilities are inadequate for our requirements, let alone the staging of a Victorian Championship, we are hopeful of an early response from our Council.

David McGrath - President.
