2010 - 11  final season

Annual Report to VSA

Annual Report to VSA - 2010 / 2011 Season

The 2010/11 season commenced as the previous season had finished, with our only remaining competition the Open Mixed Twilight, faced with the prospect of being only a three team competition. Once again the three teams agreed to avoid the bye by playing double headers, with a late game under lights.

All was going well, with a mixture of youth & first time players, for the first half of the season till Christmas. But unfortunately this all changed after the holiday break with the withdrawal of team Odd Ball Out. Faced with the prospect of the association immediately going into recess, both the remaining two teams, TNT and Mariners, agreed to play the season out with some form of closure by playing a best of five finals series.

The Mariners team, being captained for the first time by Will Hector and amazingly with three of his younger brothers also playing, took on the oldest team of the competition TNT, who had a majority of rookie players. Although expecting a close fought series, TNT suffered from a lack of match experience and Mariners proved too strong winning the series 4-1. I suppose the moral of the finals series was - beware of a team full of Hectors.

Sadly to say with the association now in recess, our future is uncertain. To run a viable Open Mixed Twilight competition we need four teams for this to happen again. Hopefully this season is not our association's final swan song and we can get those two extra teams onto the diamond for season 2011/12.

On a personal note, since my first involvement with the game of softball back in 1991 and during the last 15 seasons on the Executive Committee, with the last 10 as president, I have many fond memories of the sport both on and off the field.

Some of the more pleasurable moments include, taking over my team TNT in 1995 and winning our first game after one and a half seasons of losses and then next season making the grand final, the hosting of the Victorian Open State Championships in 2004 as president, my receiving of life membership of the WSA in 2007, to name a few highlights.

If this is my and the associations last report to VSA, I must simply say that for the last 20 seasons of softball it has indeed been a pleasure.

Yours in softball,

Ross Game

President

Wellington Softball Association.
