Annual Report to VSA for season 1989/1990
SALE SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT
The highlight of the 1989-90 season for Sale Softball Association was the opening of our new grounds at Stephenson Park. With the help of Sale City Council, Department of Sport and Recreation, Sale Rotary Club, and the other user bodies (hockey and baseball) we now have a safe and spacious playing venue. The new fields, along with the adjacent football and cricket grounds will make an excellent venue for when we next host a Victorian Championship.
The co-operation of the user bodies has been excellent, and we are most thankful for the efforts put in by the Sale City Council in maintaining the grounds in near perfect condition. Over a thousand trees were planted around the perimeters by local school children on World Environment Day recently. We look forward to their rapid growth to provide a much needed windbreak and welcome shade.
A clubroom and permanent backnets are future targets towards which the association should aim.
Our past season had its ups and downs. Our Saturday afternoon competitions appear to have a shaky future as we are having great difficulty maintaining numbers and interest. The season was marred by many forfeits. Saturday afternoon trading seems to be the major culprit.
Our T-ball competition is thriving, with sixteen teams of keen children from 6-10 years of age. Our major concern with T-ball though, is that there are not many girls playing the game.
Our twilight mid-week mixed competition continues to grow and it appears to have a healthy future. Several players who had given the game away have now returned, knowing that their weekends will be free for other sports or activities.
Our tournament teams met with mixed success, but can all hold their heads high for their efforts with limited player resources.
The under 16 team, under the coaching of Bev Beard, was by far the best prepared of our teams which was reflected in their performances. They won the Gippsland Championship and the Melbourne round robin, and came within a whisker of winning their grade at the Victorian Championships.
Congratulations to Joanne Drewry and Rebecca Czosnek on being named in the Under 16 development squad.
Our make-shift Open team performed far above expectations to play in the final at the Victorian Championships. We very nearly had to pull out due to lack of players, but with the help of some juniors, and a couple of "not quite over the hill" oldies we were able to make up a team. The team would have been happy to have at least one game, but to defeat all teams bar one in fighting style was just reward for those players who committed themselves to fulfilling our tournament obligations.
Grand Final results were as follows:
Open: Squaws ;Under 17: Squaws ; Under 14: Misfits ;Under 15 Mixed: St Thomas' All Stars ; Open Mixed A: Blue Jays; Open Mixed B: Roadrunners.
