Annual report to VSA
SALE SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION
SEASON 1990/91 REPORT
The Annual Meeting of the Sale Association was held in September 1990 and the season got underway in October. The Association this year ran competitions for the following sections:-
T-BALL - Prep to Grade 2
- Grade 3 to Grade 6 (approximately 200 players)
SOFTBALL - Under 15 Mixed (6 sides)
- Mixed open A & B Grade (8 sides)
- Open women (4 sides)
All grades were well supported except for open women which has been of concern for a number of years. There were four sides so a competition was possible but before the start of the next season there will be extra effort put into recruiting more players.
The Association were able to field sides in all Gippsland Championships and with the exception of Under 14 Girls, all Victorian Championships as well. Four of our junior players - Rebecca Czosnek, Stephanie DeMuth, Penny Beard and Sarah Menke were chosen to attend State Development Clinics.
Our umpires represented the Association at all Championship weekends and it was most exciting that both Ginelle Waugh and Francis McGrath now have a level 2 accreditation joining another Sale umpire, Bev Beard, as the only three of that level in Gippsland.
The Association are also very proud of our youngest Open Women's side - Squaws Gold -who after winning the local Grand Final went on to winning the Bessie Frood Memorial Trophy held between Club winners from all Gippsland areas. This is the first time since the competition was formed in 1981 that a Sale side has won and being such a young side - all Under 19 - it gives us great encouragement for a bright future.
The Sale City Council have also been especially "kind" to the users of Rotary Reserve this year, and over the Christmas break installed a sprinkler system. This will keep the grounds in top conditions and provide a good playing surface for all sports using the facilities.
It was decided this year that sponsorship of representative sides needed to be sought. Letters were sent to a number of local companies and follow up is continuing.
In summary, the 1990/91 season proved quite successful and it is anticipated that 1991-92 will be even better.
